MultiKulTea

Project Overview

MultiKulTea was my university final project, developed as part of a team assignment. Our task was to conceptualize, design, and create a product prototype from start to finish. As someone passionate about the design aspect of media, I was thrilled to take on the creative responsibilities. With my knowledge and experience in the print industry, I brought our team’s ideas to life, ensuring the product was both visually appealing and technically feasible.

Concept

MultiKulTea was inspired by my fascination with cultural diversity and global traditions. It celebrates the unique aspects of cultures we often know little about.

The concept blends two ideas: the variety of global calendars and tea's universal role in fostering connection. Tea, a shared ritual worldwide, symbolizes unity. This inspired MultiKulTea—a box of 12 tea bags, each representing a different culture.

What Makes MultiKulTea Special

Cultural Representation: Each tea bag is named after a significant celebration from its culture, featuring tea from that region and information about the associated tea traditions, preparation methods, and the holiday itself.

Educational Mission: The product seeks to decentralize dominant cultural narratives and celebrate global traditions, raising awareness of diverse customs and perspectives.

Design & Branding

As the creative lead, I designed illustrations in a (digital) linocut style, giving the branding a handmade, authentic feel that reflects cultural warmth. The linocut style also shaped the logo, a circular design symbolizing both a tea cup and the globe, creating a cohesive and welcoming identity.

Motivation & Purpose

Tea is a universal connector, uniting people across cultures. By combining tea culture with the diversity of global calendars, MultiKulTea fosters appreciation for humanity’s shared traditions while showcasing unique cultural expressions. This product is a celebration of diversity, unity, and awareness—bringing stories of different cultures into people’s everyday lives.

Final product

MultiKulTea is a thoughtfully designed tea box that brings together cultural diversity through the shared ritual of tea and storytelling. Crafted from durable, natural-textured Flora paper, it holds tea bags made from biodegradable Pergamin paper, ensuring the tea's aroma is preserved while preventing cross-contamination. Semi-circular cuts in the packaging, inspired by the shape of the globe, reinforce the theme of unity and connection.

The box opens like a gift, creating a celebratory moment that mirrors the excitement of discovering new traditions. This thoughtful design enhances the experience, inviting users to take a year-long journey through global festivities. Each month features a unique tea and insights into its culture, offering a harmonious blend of functionality, design, and storytelling that celebrates the richness of human diversity.
